From the amphitheatre in which it is performed to the team of volunteers, all aspects of The Canadian Badlands Passion Play offers guests a unique tourism experience that reveals the essence of Alberta as a very special place. This past summer heralded the first sold out show in the event’s 16-year history with more than 12,000 people from all over the world attending.

“The Canadian Badlands Passion Play site is recognized worldwide as an authentic and visually dynamic passion play site,” says Christopher McLellan, Operations Consultant, Canadian Badlands Passion Play Society. The natural amphitheatre, surrounded by rugged badlands, makes a perfect setting for the telling of the ‘greatest story ever told’. The site is almost as important as the production itself in creating the experience for the visitor.”

From its beginning as the idea of one man in a small Alberta town, The Canadian Badlands Passion Play captures one of the very fundamental essences of Alberta, says McLellan. Albertans are known for their insatiable determination and drive and LaVerne Erickson, founder of the event (as well as Rosebud Theatre), is no stranger to this concept. “He took what some might call an unachievable dream, and with a small group of Albertans, turned it into a major Alberta Cultural attraction,” McLellan says.

Not only does the Drumheller Valley come together to stage this event, but also people from all backgrounds and beliefs and from all over the province come to perform, volunteer and watch the production.
